Restoring Smiles Celebrates 9 Years Of Empowering Women
Toronto, February 15, 2019 –
Since its launch on International Women’s Day 2010, the Dr. Borna Meisami Commemorative Foundation, continues to help women experiencing gender-based violence. Through its program Restoring Smiles, the foundation provides domestic abuse survivors with restorative dental treatment free of charge. The foundation works closely with women’s shelters in the GTA to identify women in need of care. To date, the foundation has provided more than $800,000 of dental treatment to survivors of domestic abuse. Restorative dental treatment not only relieves pain and repairs visible defects; but also empowers women to reclaim their lives.
“A confident women is an empowered women,” says executive director and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Tina Meisami. “Our goal is to help women regain their full facial and dental function, but also increase their self-confidence so that they feel empowered as they rebuild their lives.”
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women – while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance. The theme for 2019 is #BalanceforBetter, a demand for a more gender-balanced world. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive.
In honour of this year’s theme, the foundation is holding a designer showcase and artisan to celebrate and promote woman-led small businesses and artistic entrepreneurs. Guests can expect an exhibition by designer Leyla Kashani, and a curated artisan marketplace, featuring visual artist Massoumeh Jian, bohemian-luxe jewelry from Clara Lifestyle, satirical feminist lifestyle products from MANTONE, handcrafted modern ceramics from Ceramic Sense and more. The Shopping Social will take place on Friday, March 1, 2018 from 6-10pm at Arta Gallery at 14 Distillery Lane, Toronto, ON M5A 3C4.
